Navigating the Information Maze

چکیده
The strategic approach that organisations take to the management of information, and the knowledge that it can provide, is of increasing importance today. Globalisation of business and the move to networked organisational structures present new challenges to IS professionals to support organisational strategies through the development of appropriate systems. Systems are required to ensure that raw information a useless item in itself is structured in a manner which converts it into useful information. In an era of information overload, the ability to filter out irrelevant information and quickly and easily access the knowledge necessary for a specific business activity is vital.

Understanding Humans' Strategies in Maze Solving
Navigating through a visual maze relies on the strategic use of eye movements to select and identify the route. When navigating the maze, there are trade-offs between exploring to the environment and relying on memory. This study examined strategies used to navigating through novel and familiar mazes that were viewed from above and traversed by a mouse cursor. Eye and mouse movements revealed t...
متن کاملIntellectual Property in collaborative projects: navigating the maze
This article analyses the use of IT tools in the management of Intellectual Property in collaborative projects involving groups of firms and their customer organisations in the design, development, manufacture and maintenance of complex products. Through an in-depth study of IP management practice in collaborative defence projects we identify two contrasting approaches to the implementation of ...
متن کاملNavigating a Maze with Balance Board and Wiimote
Input from the lower body in human-computer interfaces can be beneficial, enjoyable and even entertaining when users are expected to perform tasks simultaneously. Users can navigate a virtual (game) world or even an (empirical) dataset while having their hands free to issue commands. We compared the Wii Balance Board to a hand-held Wiimote for navigating a maze and found that users completed th...
متن کاملInfluence of Landmarks on Wayfinding and Brain Connectivity in Immersive Virtual Reality Environment
Spatial navigation is influenced by landmarks, which are prominent visual features in the environment. Although previous research has focused on finding advantages of landmarks on wayfinding via experimentation; however, less attention has been given to identifying the key attributes of landmarks that facilitate wayfinding, including the study of neural correlates (involving electroencephalogra...
متن کاملEffect of visual cues on human performance in navigating through a virtual maze
Many applications of virtual environments (VE’s) require people to be able to have some kind of spatial knowledge and use visual cues to perform well in the VE. Thus, the design and presentation of cues is important for the efficient use of a VE. In this paper, we report the results of an experiment in which groups were allowed to use three different visual cues (only 2-D map cue, 2-D map with ...
متن کاملUse of Spatial Information and Search Strategies in a Water Maze Analog in Drosophila melanogaster
Learning the spatial organization of the environment is crucial to fitness in most animal species. Understanding proximate and ultimate factors underpinning spatial memory is thus a major goal in the study of animal behavior. Despite considerable interest in various aspects of its behavior and biology, the model species Drosophila melanogaster lacks a standardized apparatus to investigate spati...
